Editor's Note:

"Are You Scared ... You Should Be!"

While today's title may be a bit dramatic, (it's my flare for drama coming out, sorry;-) the topic I'm going to discuss in actuality is quite disturbing. The simple fact is, if you're connected to the Internet and have an email account, you're at risk.

Today's Internet environment, unfortunately, is less than friendly. There has been a massive proliferation of scams, viruses, hackers, hoaxes and more, setting traps for the unsuspecting and unwary. Between the scams, like the "Citibank" email which went out over the weekend asking for checking account information, to the worm trying to exploit a hole in XP, if you're doing business on the Internet you have to be smart and you have to be prepared.

First let me say, I am not a security expert. However, as an active online business person I am a target. Therefore, I make sure I use common sense and I am always careful to protect my computer and my business.

If you're online, you need to be aware of 4 common Internet attacks and how to avoid them:

1) Avoiding Email Scams

Scam offers frequently arrive by email. If you receive an email requesting payment or personal information think before you act. Ask yourself if you've ever even heard of the company, if not then delete the email.

If the email appears to be from a company you do do business with, then check the full header of the email. With so many scams and viruses these days, it's a good idea to understand the basics about the header of an email message so you can see where an email is really coming from. If you're not familiar with email headers, here's what you should look for in a header.

You want to find the name of the server which actually sent out the email. When looking at the header search for the word "Received:". After the word the name of the server which sent you the email is listed.

As an example, take a look at the full header of this issue of DEMC E-Magazine, you'll see after the word "Received:" it says - from lyris.demc.com . Note how our mail server name matches the "From" address of the email after the @ sign, where it shows - @lyris.demc.com .

When the server which sent the email and the "From" address of the email match it is likely the email came from the company. Scam emails try to hide where they are coming from so they can not be tracked, therefore the server's name and email's "From" address usually do not match.

If after checking the header you're still unsure about the email's validity, it never hurts to go to that company's web site and contact the company directly to ask if they sent you the email message.

2) Avoiding Online Business Scammers

Yes, there are disreputable businesses. They exist both on and off the Internet, however, the Internet makes it easier for unscrupulous people to deceive others.

To avoid a scamming online businesses do your homework. If you like the looks of a business' offering, first investigate the company and the offer. Make sure you can contact the company and that they respond back to your questions. Also look up the company by doing a search on its name in an engine and see if you're overwhelmed with negative responses. Finally, it never hurts to ask for a reference or two in order to learn more about a business.

3) Avoiding Hacker Attacks

When you make a connection to the Internet your computer is vulnerable to hackers. They can find ways into your computer to see what's on your machine as well as move, delete and copy your files. Your best protection against hackers snooping around your computer is a firewall.

As I am not an expert on firewalls, I am going to recommend you review the Gibson Research Corporation site at - https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2.
You'll find their "Shields Up" is a terrific free resource.

It's worth taking a minute to review the vulnerabilities of your computer. I expect your computer stores sensitive business information, you want to be sure is protected. You'll find numerous suggestions and recommendations on securing your Internet connection at GRC.com. Plus a number of good firewalls are reviewed. (One of their top firewall recommendations, ZoneAlarm, even has a free version, leaving you no excuse to not get protected!)

4) Avoid Contracting a Virus

Viruses and worms are rampant these days. Everyday, my incoming email is loaded with virus files that have to be deleted.

Never opening an attachment delivered with your email will help protect you to a certain degree. But with HTML email, viruses can be embedded in the HTML and just viewing the message can lead to problems. Because of viruses embedded in HTML, even surfing the web, can cause your computer to contract a virus.

The solution is anti-virus software. Please realize, if you acquired anti-virus software 2 years ago, it's no longer going to be effective. New viruses, Trojan horses and worms are constantly being let loose on the Internet. As a result you need to regularly be updating your anti-virus software.

I currently do not know of any free anti-virus software on the market which is updated sufficiently. However, you can find a number of reasonably priced software solutions which are highly rated such as Norton, McAffe, or PC-cillin.

When looking for anti-virus software, in addition to being sure it provides regular updates, make sure the anti-virus software integrates easily with your email program. As email is one the main communication tools you use to connect with customers you want to make sure you can easily send and receive emails without contracting or spreading a virus.

Yes, taking these steps to protect yourself may seem tedious but it is well worth the effort. When conducting business on the Internet it is better to live by the motto "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".

Email Marketing Insights:

"Direct Mail Marketing Now As Easy As Email"

Is the United States Postal Service (USPS) a marketing innovator? As it turns out, the kind folks in the blue shorts are in fact making it easy for even the smallest business to duke it out with their biggest competitors by using the USPS new "mailing online (MOL)" direct mail service - check it out at http://www.usps.com/mailingonline

With MOL, you can escape the dreary part of direct mail marketing - the printing, the stuffing, the stamps, etc. MOL users simply create a document, upload it to the MOL website with their mailing list and credit card information, and press "go". Within 48 hours, the members of your mailing list are receiving the marketing message in their postal mailboxes.

Speed & Price

The best two parts of the MOL service are the speed and the price. Jobs uploaded early in the business day can be printed and postmarked the following day. The per piece cost is not much more than the price of a single stamp since even MOL jobs sent First Class get a "presorted" USPS discount.

A 4.24 by 6 inch postcard can be printed and mailed First Class for just 24 cents. A one and two-thirds page business letter or brochure can be sent "envelope free" (the last third is needed for the address) for just 56 cents per piece. And the minimum number of pieces you can send per job? One.

That's right, while other direct mail houses turn away customers with minimums under several thousand, the USPS takes all customers and gives them all equally great service.

Before MOL you had to create your master document, drop it off at the printer, wait until it was done to figure postage, apply postage and addresses, and drop it off at the post office. This whole process could take you a whole month to finish. And if you're say mailing from the West Coast... it would be another week before East Coast recipients received their copy. With MOL your document is printed and dropped in the mail from several dozen USPS distribution points across the country...so everyone gets their document at the same time no matter where they live in the US.

As Easy As Typing An Email

MOL users don't need to know anything more about document creation than how to type and save a document on their hard drive. Novice computer users can use their PC "Notepad" utility and save the document as a text (TXT) file. Most users will probably use Microsoft Word and create a slightly more appealing document. You may already have access to documents through your company that have a more professional appearance. You could also invest in a copy of Microsoft Publisher as it provides many templates to choose from and makes professional document creation a snap.

Content Creation - Keep It Simple

The biggest challenge will be in generation of content you believe is worth the price of postage. The following types of content pieces will get your creative juices flowing.... pretty much write themselves....and are worth reading:

1. Price & Product Postcards - Many of you may dream of being able to instantly contact your customers and tell them whenever you come out with a new product or price point. MOL makes that a snap. Simply write a 5-7 word headline followed by a three- sentence description ending with a phone number or web address for more information.

2. Personal Postcards - Remember your customers birthday, anniversary, graduation or other significant occasion. Be sure and include a brief description of some product you want to highlight...even just a web address.

3. Monthly or Quarterly Newsletter - Most of you would look forward to writing a monthly newsletter with the same excitement as having a monthly root canal.....but the customer retention benefits and referral business make it a smart business decision. The easy way to do a one or two page newsletter would be to simply include one or more of the following:

- Summarize price and product news...simply repeat what you sent out (or should have sent out) on the postcards.
- Summarize industry headlines related to your business... give your views, or if you don't have a view simply reprint the views of others (with proper attribution of course).
- Case Study...write up three paragraphs on a new or existing customer you helped solve a problem...or their experience with one of your products.
- Top 10 List....any of you with any experience at all can write a years worth of top 10 lists in a day. How about the top 10 benefits of a particular product? How about the top 10 reasons to (insert topic)? Or how about the top 10 mistakes made by (insert topic)?

Just Ask For Referrals!

If you do nothing else, just send out a monthly postcard asking for referrals. The commitment to a monthly postcard does two separately important things for you. It keeps your contact information in front of your customer and it reminds them on a monthly basis that they have immediate access to a friend in the "ABC" business. And of course the number one reason you don't get referrals is you don't ask for referrals. Well, if you're too shy to ask in person or on the phone, let the postcard do the talking!

If you haven't attempted direct mail marketing before because you thought it too costly, too time consuming, or too much work....think again. Things have changed in your favor. The time is right for you to give it a try.

Recently I interviewed Felix Ibay, a "student" of Graham Hamer. I interviewed Graham, author of the best selling "Traffic Jam Formula", earlier this year. You can see the interview by visiting the DEMC archives at: http://www.demc.com/newsletters/4_16_03.html

Felix Ibay, followed Graham's strategies and grew his emailing list from a thousand to over 10,000 in under 30 days! To me that was VERY impressive, so I thought it would be worthwhile to learn more about Felix Ibay.

I discovered that Felix has been around computers and the Net for quite a long time in fact he was getting ready to celebrate his 63rd birthday when I interviewed him.

Cort: First, Happy Birthday, Felix! So what were you doing before you got involved with Internet Marketing?

Felix: Yes, I am 63 years old - married, with 3 children and 6 grandchildren. I'm originally from the Philippines, now a resident of Orangeville, Ontario Canada. I've been a Computer System Analyst, with a Degree in Business, and have 30-years of job experience in the airline and oil industry.

I also have 30-years of direct mail marketing experience I acquired from my own business and joint ventures. Throughout those years I developed friendly contacts with online marketing gurus, publishers, authors, and seminar speakers.

In September 1991, I attended Gary Halbert's Seminar in Key West Florida, which inspired me to retire and pursue a full time career in online marketing. Luckily, I got involved with Scott Covert, the Banner Advertising King, and we introduced our "Master License Package" (the first of its kind in the industry) at the Super Marketing Conference in Las Vegas, in the spring of 1992.

It was early 1993 when we launched our first web site, and we've been online since then. In June, 1998, I attended The Quick Cash Video Marketing Summit ($2,000 a seat! ) at Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and was a guest speaker with Marlon Sanders, Jonathan Mizel, and Declan Dunn.

Cort: You have had the experience of working with the pioneers of Internet Marketing! So how did you meet Graham Hamer?

Felix: Glad you asked, Cort.

It's an amazing story. I almost quit my Internet business, then suddenly I was catapulted into an incredible opportunity that made me decide to stay and pursue my highest goals in life. The real story revolves around the fact that I decided to just help others and said the heck with making money on the Net.

It was the last week of February, 2003, when I met Graham and found his Profit-Plan. You know, I have had my share of successes on the Net for the past 10 years. However I was feeling stale this past winter and things had slowed down in my business. I had tried everything, but nothing seemed to work until I got hold of Graham's Profit-Plan. I got excited and somehow it re-invigorated my business.

I exchanged emails with Graham - and I found that he is one of few marketing gurus I know who answers his emails one-on-one. I found his personal attention to be a great inspiration.

Cort: You have said Graham helped you build your emailing list. How did he help you do that?

Felix: I became so inspired, I made a commitment to use the Profit-Plan as a blueprint for my business and as a way to help others succeed in their own business.

I read Graham's report which revealed a system with a reliable source for fresh, reasonably priced leads and a strategy for converting those leads into subscribers.

I can't discuss the specifics of Graham's method here, as they are exclusive to Profit-Plan members, however, I have written a report "My List Building Secrets" which I will send to anyone who would ask for it. Cort: Thanks, Felix and I know you will be swamped with requests! What advice do you have for someone building his/her mailing list?

Felix: The most important aspect of list building is to set goals. Decide how big you want your list to be and give yourself a deadline to meet that goal. Then work on devising a strategy to achieve your goal.

Cort: What are you doing about Spam filtering?

Felix: I can't say much about Spam filtering because I haven't used any software to stop spammers. All I use is Norton as a protection against spams with viruses.

Cort: We certainly know that Email Marketing plays a major role in your success. How much of your campaign do you devote to this marketing vehicle?

Felix: The majority of my marketing is done with email as I've found it to be the best way to get sales. Most of my sales come from solo emails and a series of personal email follow-ups. Personal email follow-ups in fact are my secret weapon to getting sales of high-priced items ranging from $500 to $5,000.

Online (blind) ads, whether free or paid are very elusive in terms of getting results. In order to make a sale, you have to repeatedly be offering the right product, to the right prospects, at the right time. Email marketing gives you the ability to make that repeat contact and close the sale.

Cort: Do you use HTML Email Marketing?

Felix: Again, I can't say much about HTML Email because I don't use it. But I can speak about my reaction when I see an HTML Email, even those I receive from marketing gurus. I seldom read them. Somehow it seems so impersonal, so what I do is to put them in a folder with the intent of reading them later. In effect since I never find the time later, HTML emails are seldom read.

When I send email, whether a sales email or a personal follow-up it's always personalized, in plain text without any fancy font or color background. Just a plain and friendly email.

Cort: Now comes the time for my favorite question: What would you do if you were starting over again?

Felix: Sorry to disappoint you Cort, but my answer is nothing.

When I founded Business Success Associates in 1968, my motto was: "Our success depends on making those around us successful". Since then, it's been a very exciting and rewarding journey for me. Today, I want to bring this to the next level and plan to pass on to others the things that made me what I am today.

I have a new motto: When you care for others... success will follow!
