Editor's Note:

"Cold Realities of Online Business"

We interrupt the current programming to bring you an important announcement!

Alas, that is what happened two weeks ago when I informed you of the new email child protection laws.

Previously, I had been reviewing the steps my partner and I are taking to develop our new site for Futures and Forex traders. Then at the end of June, whack, we learned of the Michigan and Utah child protection laws.

These laws to put it mildly threw us for a loop. The new project we were working on, came to an immediate halt. We've had to focus all our attention during July on making our existing sites compliant.

So in essence, the break in my coverage of our new Futures and Forex project really illustrates how we as small businesses have to operate. One and/or two person operations, as we are, do not have a department we can delegate to handle the Michigan and Utah laws.

It's up to us to make sure the DEMC business complies with new laws, or new technologies or deals with unexpected disasters. When these issues occur, as you experienced with us recently, new projects are pushed aside.

We will resume development on our new futures and forex project once we've resolved current problems. And, yes I'll continue sharing with you the steps you can take to build a profitable Internet business. So stay tuned.

In the meantime, however, I thought I would share with you more details on what we have been doing in order to comply with the Michigan and Utah Child Protection laws. My hope is to give you a good look inside the running of an Internet business. As you'll find out, it is not always cake and ice cream:-)

In this last issue I noted some of the changes we intended to make. We'll we've been hard at work on these updates.

First, for our SendFree autoresponder service we have had our programmer re-writing the code to eliminate the existing ad exchange. The ad exchange allowed members to exchange email ads at the top of their autoresponder messages. The emailing of these ads to unchecked addresses is now too great a liability.

The chance that a request could be from a minor address which is listed on either the Michigan and/or Utah registries is very possible. Then sending out an ad to this address could cause problems not only for the members involved but also for us. The ad exchanges had to go.

However, with the elimination of the ad exchange, the USP - Unique Selling Proposition - of SendFree is gone. With no ad exchange, SendFree is no different from any other autoresponder services.

As you know a USP is critical to the success of your online business. You have to give your prospects a reason to buy from you and not your competitors. In our opinions it was not an option to have no USP for SendFree!

Therefore, we began the process of brainstorming. Was there another USP we could develop? Or was there another way to do an ad exchange and keep our current USP.

Well, we decided that keeping the ad exchange USP was the best course of action. SendFree is known for its free advertising. Plus our organic search position for the keywords "free advertising" is excellent. To give up the free advertising USP of SendFree could be the site's death knell.

After much discussion and research we found a way to keep the free advertising option available to our members. The updated SendFree ad exchange does not rely on sending email ads, so we will not have to worry about the new Michigan and Utah child protection laws. What the new ad exchange will do is help members build their email lists by generating quality email leads for their offers.

In fact, I'd like to think the updated SendFree ad exchange is going to be even better than its predecessor.

Now that we devised the updated SendFree ad exchange, we are working to have it developed. You'll find the process of coming up with an update and getting it developed for an existing business is the same process we underwent for our brand new futures and forex business. In addition to the ad exchange restructuring we've worked on, we also have had to update the SendFree service to ensure that our members can comply with the Michigan and Utah child protection laws. We're building in the ability for members to export their email lists in order to run them against the registries. Then once their lists are scrubbed, they can import their cleaned list back into their autoresponders.

Along with the programming changes, the terms of service for the SendFree service had to change. We had to inform members of the new laws and require compliance. We also needed to strengthen the indemnification clauses should a member not comply. If you'd like to compare the old SendFree terms to the new SendFree terms, you can access each from autoresponders - oldterms@sendfree.com and newterms@sendfree.com .

Of course, the changes with SendFree are only part of what we've been working on. As I noted in our last issue, we also are going to update DEMC E-Magazine. The second project we have been working on is condensing the DEMC subscriber list. We've asked older subscribers to reconfirm. At present our new smaller subscriber base looks to be around 30,000. The issues of DEMC E-Magazine after August 1st will be sent to the smaller list.

We will be checking the new DEMC list against the Michigan and Utah registries, thus we will continue to be able to offer classified ads in our issues. Should you choose to advertise with DEMC in the future, you'll know your ads will not be sent to any registered minors addresses.

With the need to re-evaluate our businesses, we thought it also would be a good time to update the DEMC E-Magazine layout as well as the DEMC site.

Based upon survey feedback as well as email deliverability findings we are restructuring DEMC. Every publication will continue to be packed with content, what you wanted. The issues will also have affordable classifieds, again a request you made.

However, the weekly issues will be short and to the point. You'll find brief summaries of the articles in the emails and a reduced number of ads. We have found and read that deliverability for shorter emails is significantly better than for the long issues of DEMC E-Magazine we've been sending. Plus you'll find the new layout easier to read and navigate.

Keep in mind this sample is a work in progress. We are still finalizing the details of both the layout as well as the ad options. But you'll get a good idea of the changes we're implementing.

Whew ... we are busy!

You probably noticed not all of the changes we're making were necessary for compliance. That's true. The updates we're making go beyond what was minimally needed. However, since we were making changes, we believed now was as good a time as any improve the overall usability of our services.

An important caveat in business is that you always need to be improving and updating. Because, if you’re standing still, in reality you are falling behind your competitors.

During these past articles we covered some of the key elements of marketing with RSS, starting with what RSS is, how to plan your feeds, how to create your feeds and all the way to promoting your RSS feeds externally.

Today, before we move in to more complex RSS waters in future articles, we'll do a review of the key steps you need to take to start successfully marketing with RSS. Use these as your personal RSS marketing checklist to get your started and help you see whether you're on the right track.

1. Start Using RSS as an End-User

The first step to getting started with RSS marketing/publishing is getting your own RSS aggregator, subscribing to other RSS feeds and just seeing and understanding how it all works.

There's a variety of RSS aggregators to choose from. Just a small sample:

a) Web-based RSS aggregators (websites):

2. Plan Your RSS Feeds

Planning your RSS feeds might be the most important thing you do about RSS. You most certainly need an RSS feed for your e-zine, your news section, your articles etc. But how you will package these, and what others you might want to offer, is much more complex than we can cover in this space. You might also want to do follow-up (autoresponder) RSS feeds, feeds for your affiliates, feeds for your employees or business partners, feeds for the media, and so on.

3. Create a List of RSS Marketing/Publishing Requirements

Then create a list of requirements for the RSS marketing/publishing solution you will be getting to publish your feeds. The list should answer the basic questions, such as:

a) Do you want to integrate RSS publishing with your existing content management system?

b) What RSS metrics you'll want to watch? For example, are you satisfied with just a rough idea of how many people are reading your RSS feed, or are you interested in more precise subscriber counts, clicks and even individual content item popularity?

c) Do you need feed personalization, such as personalizing your RSS content with the recipient's name and other details?

d) Do you want to provide your subscribers with the ability to precisely select the content they want to receive in your RSS feed (customization), such as by content topic, keywords, authors and so on?

e) Do you want the RSS feeds to be hosted on your own server?

f) Do you need the ability to target promotional messages or other content to your individual RSS feed subscribers, for example based on their previous clicks and reading habits, or even their subscription data?

g) What's your budget?

h) Etc.

4. Choose an RSS Publishing Tool and Create Your First Feed

After you've prepared a list of requirements you can start searching for the appropriate tool. These come in a few general categories:

a) Desktop feed generation tools
Desktop software you can use to inexpensively, quickly and easily generate RSS feeds, but doesn't allow for more advanced features such as content targeting. The market leader in this category is http://www.feedforall.com.

b) Hosted online RSS publishing solutions
If you don't want to be bothered with a desktop tool and having to constantly upload your RSS feeds to your server, you could try a basic hosted online RSS publishing solution, such as http://www.myrsscreator.com. Using their simple service you don't even need your own website to publish via RSS. Another good choice, especially if you're in PR, is http://www.press-feed.com/

c) Advanced RSS marketing solutions
These will cover more advanced RSS marketing capabilities, such as scheduled autoresponder messages, database building capabilities and similar. The strongest contenders in this market are http://www.simplefeed.com, http://www.nooked.com, http://myst-technology.com and some other strong players as well. Solutions aimed especially at smaller companies include http://www.rssautopublisher.com and http://www.market-soft.com/bypass/

d) Other options
There are many other options as well, one for example being using your existing content management system to publish RSS feeds.

5. Promote Your RSS Feeds Through Your Own Channels

a) Create an RSS presentation page, on which you explain: what RSS is; how the visitor will benefit from using RSS; where they can get a free RSS aggregator (recommend one yourself!); how they can subscribe to your RSS feeds; and why they should subscribe to your own RSS feeds.

Then, on this same page, include the links to all of your RSS feeds. In addition to the standard orange RSS button, also include direct links for subscriptions via MyYahoo! (get it at http://my.yahoo.com/s/button.html) and other relevant services, such as Bloglines (http://www.bloglines.com).

b) Now promote this RSS presentation page as much as you can using all of your available channels.

c) Promote your RSS feeds directly below your e-zine subscription box, and always "above the fold". Promote your RSS presentation page (telling your visitors that's where they can subscribe to your feeds) on the most prominent locations of your site.

d) If you're publishing more than one RSS feed, but rather a couple of focused topic feeds, promote each of them next to their topics.

e) Promote your RSS feeds in all of your e-mail messages and e-zine issues.

f) As for the content, don't just say "Subscribe to receive news from my site", but rather prepare compelling copy to specifically show your visitors why they need to subscribe to your content in the first place and why they should subscribe specifically to your RSS feeds.

g) Enable Auto-discovery
Just include the following piece of HTML code in the head section of your webpages and you'll be all set: less than sign link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS" href="ENTER_RSS_URL" greater than sign

6. Promote Your RSS Feeds Through External Channels

a) Submit your feeds to the appropriate search engines and directories. A good list can be found at: http://www.masternewmedia.org/rss/top55/

b) Ping the RSS aggregation sites each time you update your online content, letting them know that new content is available to be indexed. You can use this free service: http://pingomatic.com

7. Other Key RSS Activities

a) Measure and optimize your feeds

Although web businesses use autoresponders extensively, it's doubtful that many are taking full advantage of this tool to broaden profit potential. Are you missing out on more repeat visitors, better customer contact, enhanced marketing and greater revenue? Maybe it's time to broaden your autoresponder use.

Marketers often use autoresponders for lead capture, first sending traff1c to page that offers a tantalizing piece of information in exchange for a name and email address. Once the lead is on the list, the information goes out, followed by salės messages at some point. However, there are many other ways to incorporate autoresponder use that in combination could bring substantial benefits.

Autoresponder use beyond lead capture can be slotted into two categories, though the lines may blur at times:

- Marketing: sending information to enhance or promote sales.

- Services: offering information to visitors to boost return traff1c, improve customer satisfaction and heighten business visibility.

For marketing, here are four effective ways to benefit from autoresponders.

1. Tossing a customer survey into the autoresponder message mix can provide you with valuable information about your business techniques, especially if you offer a gift of some kind for completion. The survey can be timed to go out after a certain period, after completion of an information series or after a fixed number of salės.

2. Sending an unadvertised bonus or customer appreciation gift can strengthen relationships. The gift should go out early rather than late, to help retain someone who might be wavering about staying with you. Long-term customers should get an occasional surprise too, because they can be costly to replace.

3. Motivating and training affiliates.

4. Exchange products with another marketer to be offered when someone unsubscribes. You lose a subscriber and maybe she gains one. And offering a parting gift can create goodwill that will come back to you in other ways.

Depending on the type of web site you have, you might compile a long list of autoresponder uses for the services category. Free reports are a typical use, and they can serve to cross over into marketing by linking to subscriptions that carry a stronger sales message.

Your services list could also include:

1. Responses to frequently asked quėstions.

2. Your products and services catalog.

3. Newsletter archives.

4. Endorsements or tėstimonials, if you have a lot. Always ask that these be passed along.

5. Relevant reference material that's in the public domain (tagged with your identifier, of course).

6. Any lengthy material.

Of course, many internet users are still on dial-up, so offering information that can be read offline is courteous service.

Providing services in as many ways as possible can be one of your most effective means of marketing, and the autoresponder is an excellent tool to aid your cause.

Search Engines... one of the MOST tricky marketing tactics of them all online simply because the SE's are forever changing the rules of Website Optimization.

Meaning... what used to work "Yesterday" might not work "Today".

Now, with that said, for the remainder of this article I want to let you in on what SE's 'LOVE' and will thank you for everytime you hand them over some.

It's really not much of a mystery to those of you who have been marketing online for some time But for those of you who haven't this is something you should seriously consider getting into for more reasons than ONE.

OKAY. Enough of the small talk. I'm going to dive straight in and get to the point Right N0W on what SE's 'LOVE' and it's simply...

... CONTENT!

That's right, "Content" is what SE's 'LOVE' and are continually crawling the Internet for Day and Night 24/7/365 and will gladly pay your website a visit if you supply it on a Daily, Weekly or Monthly basis.

The more often you supply "Content" and post it on your website the more often SE spiders will come CRAWL and "index" your website pages.

The question is... "do you write Articles?"

If you don't, maybe you might want to consider it.

Now that you know what SE's 'LOVE', your probably wondering what the BEST way is to get the SE spiders attention to get them to come on over and CRAWL your website.

Well, first off I would recommend you submitting your Articles(whether you have some already or plan on starting) to 'Article Directories' simply because SE spiders are constantly CRAWLING these websites since they are SO full of content and are updated usually on a daily basis.

You can find them by simply typing in "article directories" into your favorite search engine's search field.

The other great thing about 'Article Directories' is they usually have HIGH 'PR'(Popularity Ranking) which is another KEY thing SE's take into consideration which means once you've posted your articles on that directory or directories, the spiders will eventually 'Find' your article, crawl that page within that Article Directory and follow the corresponding links within your "Resource Box" back to your website.

The more article directories you post to, the more chances you'll have at getting some SE spider activity on your website, crawling and indexing your webpages.

This is just ONE of the ways to get SE spiders to come visit your website and only ONE reason WHY you should submit your Articles to 'Article Directories' but that's another article within itself.

For the remainder of this article I'm going to share with you a way to get SE spiders to come visit your website within the next 24 to 48 hours to have a look around.

Blogs are simply the Fastest WAY to get the SE spiders attention to come and take a look simply because Blogs contain "Content" in the f0rm of "Articles" and/or "Reviews or just general feedback from your readership.

The more often you post to your Blog the more often SE spiders will come visit.

The reason IS... everytime you post to your Blog it'll PING(Ping is simply a signal being sent out telling the SE that there's NEW content to come and index at your Blog) ...the SE's(Not all of them) ...to come take a look.

When they come visit, they'll spider your Blog and will follow all corresponding links within.

Remember the "Resource Box" located at the end of a article(you can use mine as an example) with all the authors website information and URL. This will come in handy so make sure You carefully think about what you put their with your articles.

Now, with that said, I wrote an earlier article explaining how to set-up a Blog to get Yahoo! and MSN to come visit. It's really quite simple, so don't worry yourself to much about it being difficult.

All you need to really focus on is supplying the "Content".
