"Who Else Wants a Profitable Internet Business?"

As you are discovering, or if you're just tuning in, you'll find there are many steps involved in starting up an Internet Business.

My partner and I are developing a new Internet business for Futures and Forex traders. Each issue of DEMC outlines the steps we're taking in building this new business.

If you've been looking for a "How To" guide on starting your own Internet business, you don't want to miss this information. We've been making our living online for the past 10 years and we're showing you how to do it!

You'll find that none of the steps are difficult, you just have to do the work. But believe me achieving the end result of a profitable online business is a tremendous accomplishment. It is well worth the time and effort!

So let's get back to it. Now, where were we?

Okay, I know ... I did it again! I left you hanging right in the middle of step 5 in our last issue.

Thus far we have reviewed steps 1 - 4, how to select a target market and devise the products to sell. Then we began step 5, finding the right help to get the job done. The 3 phases outlined in step 5 were first research who can help you, then second contact those individuals and third request they sign an NDA.

Step 5 - Part 2: Choosing the "right" help.

Once you have contacted the companies that look promising and they have signed a non disclosure agreement (NDA), you now need to select a company to work with. The following 4 steps will help you narrow the field. And in my experience these tactics really work to highlight the best candidate.

1) References

Please, please, please request references from companies you are interested in hiring. I also would strongly encourage you to contact those references.

We asked all 8 of the companies we contacted, in addition to signing an NDA, to send us at least 3 references. We wanted to see the work the companies had completed for these customers. We also wanted to hear from these reference how it was working with the company.

You will find the response, or lack of response, from references will help you make the decision on which company to hire.

2) Discussion

From the 8 companies we initially contacted 4 got back to us, completing the NDA and sending us references.

The next step was to talk with the companies on the phonė about the project. Before speaking with the companies, however, we sent each a copy of the "Proposal" about our futures and forex site.

Remember the "Proposal" you created in step 4? You've written out every detail you could think of for your business project. Well this "Proposal" is critical in helping you explain your vision. The better a job you do in step 4, the easier it will be to explain to the company you hire, what you want them to do.

We made an appointment with each company to speak on the phonė. Our goal was to see if the companies kept the appointment. We also wanted to get to know the company we would potentially be working with.

Speaking with individuals on the phone is invaluable in helping you determine your compatibility with the company. A conversation can also help clarify the vision of your "Proposal" to ensure the company understands what you want.

Naturally, if the companies are local you might prefer a face to face meeting.

3) Price Quote

Requesting price quotes from the companies is a must. You should at a minimum have contacted enough companies to end up with 3 price quotes for the job.

The price quote should be a fixed price for the job. Getting a fixed price allows you to compare one company to another. It also will help you know your costs upfront.

You then can adjust the project accordingly. Perhaps eliminating a feature, to cut costs.

You don't want to get caught having programmers bill you at the end of the project for the time they spent. If the companies tell you how much time it will take them before they start, they'll stick to their time frame.

With the Price Quote, you'll also want to request a completion date. And you will want to know how the company handles bug fixes or problems in their work. Some companies guarantee their work indefinitely. Others ask you to pay for any additional bug fixes after you've accepted the work.

To illustrate the importance of a fixed Price Quote, let me share with you our findings. Recall my mentioning of contacting companies in other countries. These companies highlighted there costs of $12 to $25 an hour. This seem significantly less when compared to US companies charging anywhere from $50 to $150 an hour.

If you were to base the job on the hourly rate, you would think the companies in other countries would be the least expensive. We did not find this to be the case.

Our price quotes ranged by 300%. For instance say some quoted the project at $5,000. We received quotes for 3 times that at $15,000. In fact it was a company touting $12 an hour that had the most expensive quote.

4) Decide

Once the quotes are in you'll need to decide. You may not necessarily want to go with the lowest quote. Perhaps the lowest quote figure did not come from a company that guaranteed bug fixes.

When deciding, consider all of the steps you went through. Evaluate the size and location of the company. What will you be most comfortable working with? How well did they follow your steps and follow-up with you? What did the references say? What was their completion time frame? Recall your phonė discussion, did you enjoy speaking with them? Are your personalities compatible? You do not want to get involved in a project with people who irritate you. And of course look at costs.

By following the steps outlined, you should have a good feeling for who you want to work with. Next order your preference. Who is number one, number two, etc.

Now before you tell the other companies you've made your decision, be very sure to complete the next step.

Get a contract signed.

You may find your number one choice does not like your terms. In which case you'll have to move on to number 2.

There are 5 essential elements your contract must have. And, not all companies are going to like them. But believe me you want them in place to protect your invėstment.

"The 6 Easy Steps to External RSS Promotion"

In article #4 of the RSS series we took a look at the 7 steps to promoting your RSS feeds on your website. Today, we're heading directly to external RSS promotion in order to help you generate more traff1c from your RSS feeds.

1. How To Get Started

The first step to taking full advantage of RSS for traffic generation and search engine optimization is creating additional RSS feeds for your site with content you ordinarily wouldn't deliver to your subscribers.

When you're doing RSS feeds for end-users, you're thinking in terms of some very specific areas of your website, such as your news section or your blog or your podcast, but certainly not in terms of your entire website.

Well, for the search engines, consider doing RSS feeds for all areas of your website, including your corporate content. What this will do is create a more friendly way for the search engines to index you and also provide a number of back-links from RSS directories. It will also make more of your content searchable through RSS search engines.

Furthermore, when setting-up your RSS feeds think in terms of keywords. Name your feeds with your primary keywords in mind, and use those in your description as well.

The important point hėrė is that your primary keywords need to be such that they'll actually be attracting relevant prospects who are easy to convert to customers --> we're talking about keyword combinations that likely buyers are using as opposed to more broad keywords that you might be targeting.

And finally, make sure that you set-up RSS feeds so that they target a specific topic and a specific set of keywords, so that the feed will become as relevant as possible for the search engines for your chosen micro topic.

2. The Step-By-Step Activities

A] Implement RSS autodiscovery on all of your webpages, to help the search engines and directories find your feeds on your site.

Just include the following piece of HTML code in the section of your webpages and you'll be all set:

greater than tag

B] Get your feeds listed in Yahoo!, by doing a simple 3-step procedure.

1. Start your own My.Yahoo page.
Just go to http://my.yahoo.com and sign up if you don't have your Yahoo! ID yet, or simply sign in otherwise.

2. Add the 'Add To MyYahoo' button to your site.
You may get the HTML code for it at http://my.yahoo.com/s/button.html (make sure you open it with Internet Explorer).

3. Click on that button and confirm.
That's it. You just announced your feed to Yahoo!

C] Submit your feeds to all the key RSS search engines and directories. A very comprehensive list is available hėre: http://www.masternewmedia.org/rss/top55/

D] Whenever you update any specific content sections of your site ping ping the search engines and directories to tell them new content is available from you and ready to be indexed.

The best tool to do so is http://www.pingomatic.com

E] Start consistently using Technorati tags in your content. This will help your content become more easily accessible through Technorati, one of the key RSS "search engines".

"It's Not What You Say...It's What You Do"

Book Review: It's Not What You Say...It's What You Do: How Following Through at Every Level Can Make or Break Your Company by Laurence Haughton (Doubleday, NY, 2004)

I had the pleasure recently to interview author Laurence Haughton on my blog, after reading his book, It's Not What You Say...It's What You Do. As the co-author of the book It's Not the Big that Eat the Small...It's the Fast that Eat the Slow, which made the NY Times Best Sellers list several years ago, I had high expectations of not only the new book, but of Laurence himself.

I was not disappointed.

As a writer and publisher, myself, I am often asked to review business books - so when this book came my way, I admit that I approached it with my usual skepticism. After all, in my experience, most business books seem as if they're written from some template - fill in the blanks, add a few personal stories - and the reader will suddenly transform their business into a roaring success.

Not to mention, business books are a dime a dozen at Amazon and Barnes and Noble and certainly at independent book stores where they often lie unnoticed on the 'clearance' table. Unnoticed, I should say, by all but the most serious entrepreneurs and new business folk - like you and me.

Building Blocks for Success

To my relief (and delight) It's Not What You Say...It's What You Do gave me insight into the actions I need to take to build a successful business plan and then execute it, better than almost any other book I've read in the last two years.

First of all, Laurence doesn't use chapters in his book; he uses Building Blocks. Building Block One - describes "Clear Direction" and teaches you how to "read between the lines" while making "more accurate assessments."

Building Block II talks about "The Right People" and how to hire "attitude over experience." My favorite Building Block was number III where Laurence describes "CAVE people" and teaches one how to over come their negativity. (buy the book to learn what CAVE people are.)

Perhaps one of the reasons I felt particularly attracted to Laurence's book was that I could identify with his examples. Examples that often use women to make a point. He told me that he did not do this deliberately, "It just happened," he said. "I went back over the manuscript and realized a lot of my examples of how to do things right - and a few on what people were doing wrong - showcased women executives. It was as much of a surprise to me as to anyone."

HOT teams for Hot Results

In Building Block III, Laurence talks about "hot teams" and how to create them. He says, "HOT teams are where the work is fun and, when the day ends, you can't wait for tomorrow. HOT teams are where everyone gets a lot done in less time without anyone barking orders or breathing down the team's collective neck." Do YOU have a hot team? Are you leading a HOT team? You could be, by reading Laurence's book.

He also cautions readers to be careful about creating hot teams through "processes" saying, "Process is all about standardizing tasks - highlighting inefficiencies and inconsistencies to reduce defects and increase reliability and repeatability." That's good, right? He agrees.

However, he goes on to show, "...when you take the principles of process too far, you get a process police state ...with (from an example) an art committee and local spies who report on rule breakers to the authorities." Not a good thing for company morale, nor for efficiency, wouldn't you agree?

Another reason I think this book is excellent reading for all business owners, entrepreneurs and anyone thinking of starting a business, is because Laurence focuses on the important issues, the most valuable assets any company has - its employees. He advises respect and gratitude. His approach is not cutthroat or competitive - it's sincere and thoughtful.

Laurence writes in a conversational style. He makes you feel as if you're in the room with him, receiving his advice and the value of his vast business experience, first hand. He's personal and entertaining without being didactic.

This is a book that can help you focus on doing the things that need doing to get your business to the next level, instead of just talking about them. Laurence concludes his book by saying managers and executive should remember that a promise is a promise is a promise... do not forget that it has YOUR name on it.

Good reading, terrific advice, outstanding examples for all businesses, no matter what you sell.

16. Cross promote your course with other people's products or services. This technique will double your marketing effort

18. Allow your affiliatės to use the free course as a promotional tool for your product. Each lesson could include their affiliatė link.

19. Promote other businesses affiliate programs you join with your free autoresponder course. Include a different affiliatė link on each lesson.
