Editor's Note:

"How To Increase Your Email Open Rates"

Well on the East coast of the US, spring has finally arrived. And with the new season there is lots of news to report.

The first interesting piece of news I have to share is from a case study reported by MarketingSherpa.com. The Pacific Shaving Company in testing the best days of the week to email their in-house list made an important discovery.

They found that to improve conversion they should divide their list into two groups. Those individuals who have email addresses at home and those individuals who have email addresses at work. Once the list was split they emailed to the at home addresses on the weekend and the at work addresses during the work week. Taking this tactic dramatically increased their email open rates, click through rates and conversion rates.

The Pacific Shaving Company determined at home addresses are those hosted by major ISPs, such as aol.com, yahoo.com, earthlink.net, msn.com, comcast.net, gmail.com, hotmail.com, netzero.com, etc.. The at work addresses they classified as all other addresses not at major ISPs.

Upon hearing about their results, it's definitely worth splitting your list and running a test. You just might find you too can increase your open rates and conversion rates by emailing to your at home audience on the weekend and your at work audience during the work week.

The second item of interest are the results from the new DoubleClick Q4 2004 Email Trends Report.

DoubleClick has reported an overall improvement in email marketing results comparing 2004 vs. 2003. They found there has been an increase in orders per email delivered and an increase in click throughs to purchase.

The only statistic with a notable decline was in the open rate of HTML email. However, the decline in open rates they surmized is most likely due to email filters which block the loading of images. (Open rates are calculated by loading an image. If the recipients email reader blocks the loading of images, then you can't tell if the email is opened or not.)

Overall DoubleClick reported that the rise in orders placed as a result of email marketing, resulted in an increase in revenue per email delivered.

Yes, all signs indicate the continued profitability of email marketing.

However, if your email marketing is not bringing in the sales you'd like, don't get discouraged. There are steps you can take to increase your open rates and your conversions.

Your first step should be to try out the discovery of the Pacific Shaving Company. Test out mailing on different days of the week. Then your next step should be to evaluate your marketing message.

I'm currently reading an excellent book, which I'd recommend you pick up. It's called "How to Become a Marketing Superstar" by Jeffry J. Fox. The book is an easy read and it's filled with tip after tip on presenting an effective marketing message.

A good marketing message is critical to converting customers. You can send emails all day long but if you do not have a good subject line and persuasive message inside the email, your results will suffer. To illustrate my point, I'll share with you 5 tips from the book.

1) "Customers don't buy products; they buy the benefits they get from the products."

Your marketing message therefore needs to emphasize the benefits. Think about why would a person buy your product. If you're selling a drill, why does one buy a drill? They need to make holes. So rather than saying you have a great drill for sale. Your message should discuss the fast and easy hole maker you have available.

2) "Customers would rather not lose something than save something."

Your marketing message should understand this important principle of human nature. Think about it no one likes to lose money, lose at a game or lose an item. Therefore you should point out what one would lose if they do not purchase your product/service. For instance if you're selling windows, rather than saying installing our new windows will save you $x each year, instead say, you are losing $x with your current windows.

3) "Always put the Brand Name in the headline."

When you run ads or send emails, attention spans are short. If you recall I sited in a previous column the statistic from EmailLabs that readers spend only 15-20 seconds on each email they open.

Therefore it is critical that you state your brand or company name immediately. You want to be sure that people see who is behind the message. The more an individual sees your name, the more familiar he/she becomes with your brand and the more likely sales will result in the future.

Remember the advertising truism that it takes around 7 times for an individual seeing your message before they act. With your brand in the headline, each time they see a message from you they're one step closer to acting on it. If your brand is buried in the message, the viewer may nėvėr know your name and you fail to build up any recognition.

The best headlines are those that combine brand with benefit. Consider this headline slogan - "With a name like Smuckers, it has to be good."

4) "Do not use the personal pronouns "I", "me", "we", "us", or "our" in marketing communication."

These pronouns focus on the marketer rather than the customer and mean nothing. The customer views the marketing message as selfish. Instead use your brand name.

You would not create a business card and put "Me" on it, would you? No of course not, you would show your name and company name.

5) Be specific in your message. Do not use vague generality words like Difference or Solution.

Marketing messages which state, "Our mouth wash makes a difference" do not say anything. What is the difference? Be specific in your message as to what benefit your product/service provides. If your selling mouth wash discuss the minty flavor, the fresh breath, the cleaner teeth. Where ever possible get specific. If you can say - Use "Tasty Mouth Wash" twice a day and you'll have 30% fewer cavities. Or say 4 out of 5 people surveyed prefer the "Tasty Mouth Wash" flavor.

---

Your email marketing message is critical to your success. Review these 5 tips and see if you're making any of the mistakes mentioned. Then take the time to focus on and rework your marketing message. The result is sure to be an increase in your email open rates and conversion rates.

"How To Start Publishing & Marketing with RSS"
By: Rok Hrastnik,
http://rss.marketingstudies.net

Do you remember the many RSS publishing opportunities available to you from the last DEMC RSS article?

Just to refresh your memory, using RSS you can publish practically any kind of internet content, including:

--- Your e-zine
--- Your news or blog updates
--- Audio files, such as audio interviews, press releases and even whole marketing radio shows
--- Updates for your customers
--- Your latest product information
--- The latest posts in your forum
--- And so on ...

STEP 1: Decide What Content To Publish

To get started publishing with RSS, the first thing to do is decide what content you want to publish through your RSS feeds. It's usually best to have one primary RSS feed to carry "the best" of information from multiple content sections, and then also some individual RSS feeds to more precisely meet the needs of your different visitors.

For instance, I'd start with an additional individual RSS feed to announce each issue of my e-zine, one RSS feed to carry various updates and news for my existing customers and then one or more RSS feeds for the various frequently updated sections of my website.

If I covered Search Engine Marketing News & Tips and Email Marketing Tips, I'd do an individual RSS feed for each of these topics, and so on. This way, your visitors will really get only the content they're interested in. It will also give you the ability to send out more targeted marketing messages, to really get the most from each sales letter or ad your write.

STEP 2: Decide On A Feed Generation Tool

N0W it's time to start creating your feeds.

But to do this, you will need a tool to generate the feeds for you. There really are many of these available on the market, but I'll review the most obvious choices.

A) Using Your Existing Web Publishing Tools

If you're using some sort of content management solution (such as http://www.movabletype.com for example) to update your website content, first see if it perhaps already offers RSS publishing capabilities.

Many of them already offer this out-of-the-box, meaning that creating your RSS feeds will not cost you. In this case, just work with your provider to help you create your feeds.

B) Desktop RSS Feed Generation Tools

If you just want to get started quickly, without much invėstmėnt in time or monėy, perhaps only to test out how RSS publishing works and test it out, one of the easiest options is a desktop RSS feed creator.

This software will help you create an RSS feed, which you will then need to upload to your web server every time you add new content to it.

Two possible tools to use are http://www.feedforall.com and the free http://www.usablelabs.com/productFeedSpring.html.

C) Hosted Online RSS Publishing Solutions

If you don't want to be bothered with desktop tool and having to constantly upload your RSS feeds to your server, you could try a basic hosted online RSS publishing solution, such as http://www.myrsscreator.com. Using their simple service you don't even need your own website to publish via RSS.

This type of solution will create an RSS feed for you based on the content you enter through an online interface, host your RSS feed on their server, provide you with an RSS feed subscription link and even create webpages to carry your content.

If your needs are more advanced, you might want to take a look at a service such as http://www.nooked.com, which also provides you with RSS metrics to give you an idea of how your subscribers are using your feeds, and some other marketing oriented features as well.

D) Advanced RSS Marketing Solutions

Even if you want more advanced RSS marketing capabilities, such as scheduled autoresponder messages, database building capabilities and similar, there are tools available for you.

http://www.market-soft.com/bypass/ is a special software package you download and then install on your own server. While this does require some skills, it means that all of your RSS feeds will be hosted on your server, and they'll even install the package for you if you need assistance.

But, if you want minimum fuss, take a look at http://www.rssautopublisher.com/, which provides similar features and benefits, but is hosted on their server.

STEP 3: Make Your RSS Feeds Available Through Your Site

After you've decided on the publishing tool of your choice and created your first feeds, all you need to do to get started as quickly as possible is to make your RSS feeds available through your site.

Simply upload an orange RSS button to your server and put it on your site, and then use it to link to an RSS presentation page. On that page explain what RSS is and why your visitors need it, provide step-by-step instructions on how to use RSS as an end-user, and then list the links to your various RSS feeds.

If you need some help in explaining RSS to your visitors, you can use the information from this fr'ee report: http://www.marketingstudies.net/real/index.html?demc3

STEP 4: Start Publishing Frequently

That's it. It's not all you need to know or need to be doing, but it's a start. Just make sure that you frequently update your RSS feeds (at least once per week) and give your subscribers a reason for keeping your feed, and the search engines enough content to get you higher rankings.

In the next article of the series we'll take a look at how to promote your RSS feeds on your own website to get as many people as possible to subscribe, and how to use RSS with your e-mail marketing activities.

"3 Easy Overlooked Ways to Get Free Media Coverage"
By: Kevin Nunley

Need a really BIG boost for your product or service? Want literally thousands of people to find out about you right away? And want to get all this for fr'ee?

You can get it all with N0 cost media PR on radio and TV. Before you hustle up a press release and fax nationwide, consider these three very simple, super powerful, and often overlooked methods of getting lots of fr'ee on-air time.

Easiest PR? Call a DJ

Some of the easiest PR to get is from music radio. Radio stations playing music usually make up more than half of the contacts list in any media guide. There are thousands of stations in the US and Canada looking for interesting, topical, and/or entertaining callers on their phone.

While radio has a huge reach, they get a fraction of the advertising pie--daily newspapers get 80% in most markets. Stations have few staff, yet must come up with local programming around the clock.

There are two approaches to getting on the air: * Go the formal route. Call the station, talk with the DJ or producer, tell why you would be dynamite for their audience. Then show up with your bio and Q&A in hand.

* Or be more informal. Simply call in when you feel you have something worthwhile to add. It's not unheard of to show up at the studio bearing fr'ee food.

I was a radio morning DJ for many years and would praise the gods when someone interesting would call or show up to lighten the load.

Get On Talk Radio..and Promote Yourself Fr'ee!

There are thousands of talk radio stations spread through every community all over North America. There are thousands more music and news stations who feature at least one talk program each week.

All these shows need a steady stream of interesting guests. Nothing strikes fear in a radio talk show hosts like having to do the show without an expert guest. Contrary to what most people think, the phones at talk stations don't ring that much. Hosts need an expert to add content and interest to the program...AND get listeners calling.

An expert is anyone who knows something other people would like to know. If you run a daycare center, you might have clever tips for keeping children interested and busy at home. An accountant might find a ready audience for tips on how to keep the IRS off your back.

Most talk hosts are happy to let your "plug" your business, product, service, or idea at the end of the show. Speak your phone number and web site address clearly so interested listeners can jot them down.

First find talk radio stations in your area. Look through the yellow pages, tune up and down the dial, then listen to individual shows to learn the style of the host and the topics discussed on the show. Call the station and ask to talk with the host or the show producer. Tell them about your expertise and what kinds of information you could bring their listeners.

Get On Weekend Public Affairs Programs

Got a community service project? Have you written a book? Are you a local expert on a topic that is in the news? Then you could be a guest on weekend public affairs shows.

Just about every radio and TV station in America features these. They all look for guest experts to fill out their program. Instead of getting a 60 second commercial or a five minute interview, you get a fat 20, 30, or 60 minutes on the air.

These shows aren't the biggest ratings getters. That's why they usually stick them on Sunday mornings. But their audiences are often filled with business and community leaders interested in issues. This can be a great audience to impress and a good source of future sales.

Listen and watch weekend public affairs shows in your area. Write down the name of the host. In all but the largest stations, the host or her producer (which is like an assistant in these situations) arranges guests for each week.

Call the host, suggest your topic, then send him a packet with your bio, some sample quėstions and their answers, a photo for television, and a press release.

Be sure to send the host a thank you note after your on-air appearance. Very few guests do this. It will make you stand out in the host's mind as a great guest to invite back.

"30 Article Writing Tips"

Today's SOHO Help Desk provides great advice on how to write articles for your Internet marketing strategy.

If you have a valuable tip, promotional idea, question or answers you would like included in an upcoming issue of DEMC, all you have to do is submit it by email to - mailto:helpdesk@demc2.com

== 30 Article Writing Tips ==

From: Craig Lock

Articles are great promotion tool for your online business. Writing articles can provide you with enormous amount of exposure on the Web (sounds "rude, that). You are branding yourself on a shoestring budget - it hasn't cost you a cent, but a little time and effort.

People want quality content for their ezines and their web sites; however, the competition for content is fierce. Every Web site owner wants content and hundreds of writers want their content visible on the Web. It's FR*EE promotion through your signature file at the end of your article*.

If you can write an article about your business, you can increase your links in 24 hours! As the internet adress in your resource box at the end of your articles gets picked up by the main search engine spiders, like Google and Yahoo.

Writing a free content article is simple and follows a similar professional approach as an article for a standard, paying market. So let's review some pointers in writing articles for the www:

Firstly,

1. Offer Something of Value, a Real Benefit to people. Articles that give good helpful information or explain how to accomplish something are usually best, and will be read most often.

2. Try to get into the publishers mind. See things from their point of view - why should they publish your article? In what way will it benefit their readers?

3. Accept that writing for the web is different to writing for the off-line world. People tend to skim and scan (note alliteration) when reading online. They read quickly scrolling down the page.

4. Identify your target audience.

5. Give your article a catchy title that will grab attention and make people want to read.

6. Keep your title reasonably short. Put some thought and effort into your heading - again to get your reader's immediate attention.

7. Be professional and take your article writing seriously. Write about something you know professionally. Don't be overly casual in your writing (ie. don't write exactly as you speak)

8. Keep your paragraphs short.

9. Be Clear and Concise. Get to the point quickly (enough waffle with maple syrup, Craig!).

10. Target your article to your audience with "focused information".

11. Be brief, if you are a "waffler", like this writer. People want immediate information online and have limited time usually - it's the instant_coffee, sorry generation.

12. Write briefly and concisely (redundant words, meaning the same thing, Craig!) Try to keep your article under 1,500 words. Most paying markets usually only accept between 500 and 2,000 words... and with a bit of luck they may even "pick up" your great article. Try to be concise in your wording. Brevity is the hall-mark of good writing...or so say many of the teachers of writing!

13.. Use the OCCASIONAL exclamation mark (!) to get your readers attention. Forget the ALL CAPITAL LETTERS and exclamation points!!!

14. Be credible (big word, eh?) at all times.I try to write my articles in a "conversational style with dashes of my funny humour".

15.. Use HUMOUR. People like to have a bit of fun with the occasional laugh, whilst being informed on a serious subject. At least I believe so!

16. Write from "your heart", so that you come across as a REAL person. Just write what comes naturally with INTEGRITY...and BE YOURSELF.

17. Be totally honest in your writing and don't "borrow" too much from others content. It's so easy to "steal" on the www - so do your own work and if you "borrow ideas or material, ACKNOWLEDGE. "Incidentally, I have borrowed some ideas in this article from some good writers and well-known internet marketers - thanks a lot, David, Michael, John, Meredith, Joe, Edward, Ken and Mark).

18. Be humble.and don't talk down to your readers.

19. Use bullets (not live, please, oops er sorry, bad taste) in your articles - it makes the points easy to follow.

20. Don't forget your byline ...or your "business card". Make sure that you resource box at the end of the article provides enough information to identify yourself and provide contact information. It's FR*EE advertising.

21. Offer a fr'ee report with your article - this is an easy way to collect a list of adresses for marketing your product(s). An immediate target market.

22. Test all the links in your article before submitting it.

23. Offer your articles by autoresponder

24. Conclude with a strong message. Your final point (and paragraph) should be a message that summarises your article or gets your reader to take further action, like "GET STARTED" (as I've done in this article).

25. Pay attention to feedback you get for your articles. Getting constructive feedback about your articles can help you to write better through encouragement. A very powerful motivator to write more articles..

26. Finally, make sure your layout is good (not one of my strong points!), as this greatly enhances your prospects of getting published Use plenty of white spaces, as this makes your piece more easily read.

27. Proof-read. Review your articles for errors: spelling, grammar and punctuation. Use a spell-checker. Go over your article carefully and be an editor yourself.

28. Make sure your article flows properly.

29. Re-read and re-read, until you get it "just right."

and finally...

30. Keep a file of articles you've written or ones that lie unfinished. You may have many new ideas since then. Set aside time to work on them. You may even put them into an ebook.

Self discipline is the key to writing success.

"Aim for perfection, but settle for excellence" in your article writing.

Happy writing,

Craig Lock

P.S: I hope that these tips help in your article writing. In my opinion it's the best internet marketing strategy. To your internet marketing dreams in 2005...and beyond.
