"5 Secrets To Great Content"

One of the questions I'm regularly asked by our SendFree members is what content to put into their autoresponder messages and ezine publications.

I explain that the most effective content for an autoresponder and/or an ezine is targeted informative content. To just send sales offer after salės offer to individuals who subscribe to your list doesn't work. Should you only deliver sales pitches to your subscribers, after receiving a message or two they will soon unsubscribe or they'll simply delete your emails.

The key to successfully selling to your list is to deliver quality information. When you send interesting content, those who receive your emails will actually read them. Once you have readers of your emails, then and only then you can introduce salės offers along with your content.

So the question becomes how do you develop good content? And even more essential for ezine publishers how do you continue, week after week, month after month and year after year to come up with interesting content?

Well, considering I've been publishing DEMC regularly since 1995, I'd say I have some experience in this area! Yes, I know how to develop content. Today, I'll give you my 5 secret strategies for developing content. You can use these techniques to create articles for your ezine, ecourse, ebook, or autoresponder series. The key is to make sure that you use these techniques to develop content focused to your audience's interest.

As DEMC E-Magazine focuses on marketing, with an emphasis on email marketing, the articles in each issue deal with this subject matter. If you're selling travel services, the content you develop should be related to travel. That makes sense, doesn't it! (smile:-)

With that understood, let's move on to my 5 strategies.

1) Current Events and News

One good technique is to review news articles and press releases on current events. If you've been a reader of DEMC for any length of time I'm sure you notice on a regular basis I'll quote statistics from recent studies and finding about email marketing. Plus, I review laws, such as the CAN-Spam law, and discuss how it impacts online marketers.

How do I keep up to date on current events and news? I use search engines to investigate the latest news on email marketing. In addition, I subscribe to trade publications which focus on email marketing issues.

If you're creating content for your emails start reading the news. You'll be stunned at how easily the interesting content jumps out at you for you to write about.

2) Personal Experience

You are your own best source of information. Use your own knowledge base and share your experiences in your writings.

The article you're reading right here, is a perfect example of an article based on personal know-how. As I've been creating content for DEMC for years, I can share that information with you. You'll also find the "Marketing Insight" column in today's issue is another good example of a writer using her own experience and writing about it for your benefit.

Personal experience articles are not only interesting, they also do a great job of helping you develop rapport with your readers. You're sharing something of yourself with your list members and as a result they know you better and trust you more. Building this type of credibility will help you sell more to your list. Your subscribers will come to see your recommendations, as recommendations from a friend, not as recommendations from a salės person.

3) Question and Answer

Asking your subscribers and web visitors to submit questions is an invaluable tool. When you receive a question, you have just received free market research information. The question tells you what your target audience is interested in learning more about. You can rest assured if one subscriber is interested enough to ask, many others who didn't contact you are interested as well.

You can respond to the question and be confident that what you are writing about will be read with interest by your list. Further, when you answer the question you automatically create content. You don't have to think up something to write about - your answer is the content. What could be easier than that?

I know many publications, that are strictly Questions and Answers. And these ezines are well read. So don't pass by this strategy as too simplistic - it really does work!

4) Interviews

Interviews are a terrific source of content. In fact, when we include interviews of respected online marketers in DEMC, I regularly receive emails from subscribers thanking us for the information. What's more I have read numerous ebooks that are only made up of interviews. You may even have heard of the best selling ebook put together by Joe Kumar, "30 Days to Internet Marketing Success." Joe was an unknown teenager from Singapore who made himself an overnight success with his interview ebook.

The great aspect of interviews is that you develop just one set of questions. You can then re-use those questions with many different individuals in your field.

In addition, interviews set-up a win-win situation. You as the publisher receive good content from the interviews answers. The interviewee gains excellent exposure to your list member. By you asking the interviewee to share his/her insight on a subject matter, you position that interviewee as an expert on the subject. The interviewee is then in a perfect situation to sell his/her own products/services related to that field.

To illustrate how well the interview technique works, read today's Feature Article. It is an interview with list building pro Gary Baker. You'll find valuable information on list building - this is the good content for DEMC - plus you'll see how Gary Baker is established as knowledgeable on developing email lists - this is good business for Gary.

You might say that getting interviews is not easy if you do not have a big subscriber list. Yes, this fact will make the process more challenging but a good trick to getting an interview is to do it over the phone. If you can call an interviewee and get 5 minutes of their time on the phonė you can acquire a wealth of information to put into an article. You also do not need to interview big names. Look for less well known individuals in your field who are looking to build up their name recognition. They will be more likely to grant you the interview.

5) Outside Contributors

This one is my favorite! Using an interesting article that another has written is the easiest source of good content! And as you know from reading DEMC - every issue contains articles from our regular Featured contributors.

It also is simple to find articles from outside contributors. Many individuals are looking to have their articles published as it provides them with additional exposure. You can use search engines or article directories to find articles on practically any subject matter. Three article directories to look at -

As you read trade publications online, you'll also come across articles that you find particularly interesting. Contact the authors of articles you like and ask for permission to republish the articles. Most writers will say absolutely.

You can also pay for articles. There are many ghost writing services available as well as professional writers you can hire. And, if you think that Internet marketers don't use this strategy, think again. Recently, I saw a promotion from a well known membership site, offering to pay $100 for case study articles. The Internet marketer running the site needed good content and was willing to pay for it.

So there you have it, 5 sure fire ways to develop quality content for your ezine, ecourse, ebook, or autoresponder series. Not only do these strategies work, they're also easy to employ. So start using my secret techniques today and you'll always have good content to share.

"The Forgotten Market"

There are a great many online business people who are forgetting the potėntial that this particular forgotten market can be providing them. The forgotten market I am referring to is the off-line market and as for the potential, it could prove to be quite profitable for you. What you need to do though, is take the blinders off and focus on "all potėntials" NOT JUST the one track mindset of setting up campaigns geared towards the online market.

I understand that setting up an email campaign geared to the online market is easy in more ways than one. I mean the online community already "gets it" as far as how the internet and online marketing works, therefore the "education" isn't necessarily warranted or needed. Based on that it takes perhaps less time to see the fruits of your labor.

HOWEVER ...

What you are contending with when targeting just the "online" market is saturation. Those online stand a good chance of already being exposed to someone from your particular program already sending them something, therefore your message is lost.

The offline market however haven't been exposed and therefore you have a fresh audience to target your message to. The question is "how do I reach them?"

I'll get to the "how do I" in a second, but first let me explain to you WHY I am so bent on you considering the offline market. I have worked with my local Enterprise Center - in Ontario (Canada) these Centers provide those who want to start a business with information/support and guidance to get up and running. What I have done is sat down with my local center and asked, based on the coaches experience, what seemed to be some of the bigger challenges that their clients have been asking for help with. The majority responded in the area of marketing, more specifically online marketing and how to get their business online.

These people are offline and therefore are the "forgotten market" that I was referring to.

The reaching them quite frankly is the easy part of this whole process. What I did was, through talking with the business coaches, it made arrangements to facilitate a series of workshops geared towards online marketing and how to get a business online. It took a little work in writing the seminar, however, the end results were incredible. See, by doing these workshops I had a room of 20-35 targėtėd "visitors" to my workshop. They were there because they were INTERESTED in what the topic was and were looking for INFORMATION to help them.

Within the confines of my workshop I was able to weave in my affiliatė programs - the ones that related to the topic at hand. I explained how these products/services worked for them - the basic "WHY DO YOU NEED THESE IN YOUR LIFE" process. I also shared information that would help them know what to look for when looking for these specific products/services. Therefore, I am building trust and rapport with them.

The end result??? I sold several products/services to these people and added to my affiliatės. For those who were not quite ready yet to purchase, they signed up for my newsletter that deals specifically with the topic and again hits homė why these products/services are beneficial to them when they come online.

It was a huge win/win. The attendees received some good, solid information, the kind that helped them make a more informed buying decision. I received not only 25-35 SOLID members to my affiliatė programs and/or made salės for the products/services I was promoting...but, it pegged me as their expert to the point where and if I decide to put on more seminars they want to know.

HOW POWERFUL IS THAT???

Pretty powerful!!

It isn't hard to put on a workshop or seminar, it takes a Little time, but the end results are far worth it.

Give it a shot, the first seminar may be a bit nerve racking For you, but get one under your belt and you will see just how effective it can be and you'll add it into your marketing mix for sure!!

Let's start with a rather naive query, considering present company ...

How important a part do autoresponders play in your overall Online Marketing strategy ... and why?

Oh my..without a doubt 90% of my Online Marketing Strategies use autoresponders.

I couldn't imagine running my business without them.

The simple automation that responders gives me in my every day tasks such as list building, joint ventures, follow-up, etc, is unequaled.

MM
Would it be too much to ask your favorite methods of acquiring confirmed subscribers ... frėė, and paid?

GB
Sure. My main frėė method for building up my subscriber list is by doing Joint Ventures with other list owners.

This can be done as a simple "ad swap" or can be as big as an "endorsement" for each others list, product, service, etc.

My main paid method of obtaining subscribers is by purchasing "co-registration" leads.

This is where you "pay-per lead". You basically put a small description of your ezine on a website with other publishers.

Then targėtėd visitors are driven to the website that is housing your description. The people who visit can subscribe to your ezine by simply "checking" a small box.

Then you let your autoresponder kick in and send the new subscriber a "welcome" email telling them a bit of info on your ezine.

"Co-registration" is a super fast way to add thousands of new subscribers to your list in a short amount of time.

... and once you've convinced them to join, any tips on reducing unsubscribes?

... transforming them from prospect to customer?

Oh yeah. This is the important part. You MUST "warm up" your new list. Meaning, don't put a bunch of new subscribers into your autoresponder and them immediately blast them with ads for products.

This is the main mistake made by newbies when building their list.

They purchase a few thousand "co-reg" leads, upload them into a responder, then hit them with a ton of ads.

This is wrong, wrong, wrong and will cause you quite a bit of trouble.

Your list is an investmėnt and not an immediate road to riches. You must take time to build trust with your readers. Offer them 100% pure quality content at all times.

Make yourself available. Help them. Become their friend. Believe me, it will pay off in the long run big time :-)

In your case, Gary, the next topic must be one of considerable concern for you, specifically ...

With all the SP*M, filtering, legalities, etc., that email marketers have had to learn to deal with, what do you feel the future holds for this method of communication and promotion?

Oh email marketing will nėvėr go away. By that I mean, "honest", legitimatė, email marketing.

As long as marketers pay attention to detail and have common courtesy, email will always be a valid type of Online promotion.

The spammers go away as quickly as they started, but true marketers with integrity will be around for a long time.

Text format ... or HTML?

Actually I prefer HTML but I send out my ezine to look like text.

So what I do is simply "cut & paste" my "text" into my HTML editor and save it as a web document.

Then I take that html and upload into my responder, hit a button, and BAM I am done.

Also, sending my emails like this, lets more of my loyal readers, get their ezine due to filters.

"How To Avoid Red Flags That Trigger Audits"

"The trick is to stop thinking of it as your own money." ---IRS Auditor

At many of my seminars, I am asked what are the top "Red Flags" or mistakes that trigger an invitation by the IRS to "come on down and have a chat." If you want to limit your chances of an audit, avoid the following situations:

1. Avoid Math Errors: One of the greatest "red flags" for an audit is to have mathematical errors on your tax return. The reason is that this type of mistake will cause a guaranteed IRS scrutiny. Always double chėck your math. Even better is to round your figures to the nearest dollar. Using cents simply increases your chance of making a mathematical error.

2. Losing your tax return: If you send in your return using the normal 37 cent stamp and the return is lost, whose fault is it? The answer is....drum roll.... Yours! My father had a friend who sent in his return with a $15,000 check. Both the return and check were lost. My father's friend sent in the $15,000 plus $11,000 of interest and penalties. Always send in your tax return either electronically (which is my favorite method) or by Federal Express or by Return Receipt. If there is a chėck, you may want to use registered mail. There are cases that show if the IRS losės your return and you file using these preferred methods, the IRS will waive penalties.

3. Under reporting your income: This is a great way to insure hearing from the IRS. If you fail to report some interest, dividends, salary, capital gains etc. that IRS gets notified that you earned, you will hear from them and asked to clarify the discrepancy. It is vital that you double review all your W-2, 1099s and other income paper work to insure that what you report as income on your tax return matches what IRS has received from the various sources. Remember, they get copies of what you get!

4. Using the wrong social security number: Interestingly, IRS says that this is one of the top ways to call attention to your return. Many people either omit their social security number or transpose numbers incorrectly. You should always double check your tax return to insure that you have the correct numbers for you and your spouse.

5. Failing to sign tax returns: As ridiculous as this may sound, this is the top mistake that IRS notes people make. It is crucial that you always sign your returns.

Plus here's a quick tip about credit card usage with your business.

You can't deduct your finance charges on credit cards unless the charges are specifically used for business. Thus, if 70% of the charges are used for business, 70% of any finance charge would be deductible. Thus, Congress wants you to trace all of your purchases.

We know that you won't do that. Thus, we recommend that you own and use at least two crėdit cards: one solely for business expenses and one solely for personal expenses. By adopting this technique, you can deduct all the interest on the business cards, and you can deduct the annual fees on the business cards.

I should note that I use two credit cards. One is a gold American Express card that gives both copies of charge receipts, which is very handy for business, and it provides frequent flier mileage for up to six different airlines with no black out dates. I use a second card solely for gas purchases. If you get the AAA credit card from AAA financial services, and use the card at the gas pump, you will get a 5% rebate on all gas purchases. Isn't that nice!
