"Who Else Wants Email Results?"

I'd like to start off by sending you Season's Greetings for the Holidays and best wishes for the New Year! This DEMC E-Magazine will be your last issue in 2004. Be sure to look for your next issue on January 5, 2005.

I have good news to share today on the email marketing front. The latest studies from DoubleClick as well as Bigfoot Interactive show email delivery to be on the rise. Bigfoot Interactive reported that retailers' emails reached an all-time high delivery rate of 94.6%. And DoubleClick found that delivery overall was up to 89.3%.

While delivery issues for email marketers remain an ongoing challenge, the statistics show you can improve your emails' delivery results. How do you give your emails the best chance of arriving at their intended destination? Implement these 4 tactics:

1) Keep a clean list.

First, double confirm subscribers. When an individual requests to be on our emailing list, we send them a notice to which they must reply in order to ensure that they did indeed want to sign up.

Confirming subscribers dramatically reduces the spam complaints sent internally to ISPs. You've probably seen in your own email account the "Report Spam" button, which tells your ISP a message is spam. When you don't confirm subscribers, all too often those single sign-up individuals use that "Report Spam" button in their accounts. Guess what, the ISPs record that information and if you have too many reports, your emails end up going to the spam folder or aren't delivered at all.

Second, remove addresses which bounce your email. ISPs track how much of your email is being sent to addresses which no longer exist. If they see too much email being sent to bad addresses, they assume you're a spammer and block your email. Delete out those bouncing addresses to ensure good delivery.

2) Have a clean mail server IP that's properly configured.

A critical aspect of email delivery is to have a properly set- up mail server. The mail server's IP address must have a reverse DNS look-up. In addition, more and more ISPs are requiring that mail servers have either SPF or SenderID in their DNS records.

So what the heck does that mean?

Basically these features are for email what caller ID is for your outgoing phone calls. ISPs want to check your email to see if it's legitimate and not forged.

If your email is not verifiable, the ISP won't accept it. So you need to make sure who ever you use to send email has these in place. If you're looking for an email list host which has these features in place, be sure to check out our SendFree service at http://www.sendfree.com .

In addition the IP address of your mail server must not be blacklisted. You can check the IP address of your mail server at the site DNS Stuff (http://www.dnsstuff.com ).

3) Use a content filter checker.

I screen the content of our messages for filter trigger words. Certain filtering software reviews the language of incoming emails to determine the spammyness of the email messages. Avoiding words and phrases which trigger these filters is well worth checking. A quick, free content checker can be found at - http://www.lyris.com/contentchecker

4) When necessary direct subscribers to a web site.

Unfortunately, a number of ISPs have their own proprietary content filters. One example of this is MSN/Hotmail. There is no checker you can use to test your message for delivery to MSN/Hotmail users.

As a result, your best course of action at times is to send a short note that directs the reader to a web site for your full message.

You'll notice we follow this 2 step tactic with DEMC E-Magazine. First we send out the full issue, however a few subscribers do not receive the issue. We then follow-up with a brief message notifying subscribers the issue is online. These quick notices always arrive, as they have no content that could triggers a content filter.

The good news is if you follow the above practices, as DEMC does, your email will be delivered. We recently had our mail server's delivery audited by Pivotal Veracity and they reported our delivery system is in good standing with ISPs.

So is email marketing worth the delivery battle?

Absolutely!

Getting your email delivered does generate sales. The recent DoubleClick report found that conversion rates for emails are actually on the rise. Although they reported open rates and cl1ck through rates of emails to be a bit lower, those who do visit as a result of your emails are more likely to purchase from you. In addition, the average number of orders per email delivered is on the rise.

These statistics confirm that email continues to be a profitable marketing vehicle. In addition, recent studies have revealed there's a certain type of email that outperforms all other messages.

What is this magic bullet email?

The first email you send to a new list sign-up has the highest open rate and readership.

New subscribers, new members, new visitors, etc. who register with you, eagerly await your welcome or introduction email. Don't waste the opportunity by just sending a note that you've received their request.

Instead recognize that the email you're sending will be read and will generate revenue for your business.

Include a special offer in that first email. Whatever action you most want your new lead to take - make the offer immediately in the initial email. It could be to download an ebook, buy a product/service, take a survey or visit a site. The welcome email is your chance to capitalize on the power of email marketing.

With permission email delivery on the rise and welcome emails so anticipated there is no better time to review your email marketing strategies. Use the knowledge revealed from these recent studies to improve your tactics and take advantage of the marketing opportunities email provides your business.

"How Simple Is RSS, Really?"

RSS stand for really simple syndication and yes, it is really simple!

There are literally tons of people accessing RSS Feeds and using Feed Readers on a daily basis. If you're not one of them, you most likely will be in the very near future.

RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, is basically a tool by which content can be syndicated across the world with the press of a button... within minutes.

What this means for you, as a reader, is that you can get "hot off the presses" updates, news and announcements from selected sources. You can choose to have the headlines update on your Home Page, or you can receive an audio/visual alert from your PC anytime there is a new post published to the Feeds that you are subscribed to.

This may be the World News, the latest posts from your favorite Discussion Forum, an email newsletter that you enjoy reading, or the newest products available from your favorite specialty store.

People are turning to Feed Readers by the thousands, as email has become completely inundated with unwanted messages. For every 1 email you actually want to read, there are 2 more sitting in your Inbox that you have to delete.

In addition to escaping the viruses and offensive junk mail, using a Feed Reader can save you A LOT of time online! For example, I used to sit down at my computer each morning and check several discussion forums for new posts, read the current issues of my favorite marketing newsletters and check out the blogs that I enjoy reading.

I can just sit down and open my Feed Reader - and be up to date on it all from within ONE program... and not even open an internet browser!

If you don't already have a Feed Reader, there are several options - and many of them are free. If you use My Yahoo! as your Home Page, you can add RSS Headlines to your Home Page with the press of a button. If you use the FireFox Browser, you can simply use their "Live Bookmarks" feature.

Unlike email, there is no spam. You add the Feeds you are interested in to your Feed Reader, and remove them anytime you choose. It is completely anonymous, and the publisher has no way of knowing who is reading - or of retrieving your contact information.

As a publisher, marketer or business owner... How can YOU benefit from this growing trend?

First, I would recommend that you become familiar with RSS as a User, so that you can fully understand how it all works - and how your content will appear to your growing number of readers.

That was easy, wasn't it? :)

Let's get back to how this new technology can benefit YOU, and really increase your exposure on the internet!

You can syndicate ANY type of content through an RSS Feed. A common misconception is that you have to "Blog" to have a Feed. Not true. As you just saw in the example above, even a Discussion Forum can have a Feed. Newsletters can be published via RSS. Even articles, product reviews, general updates - and of course, blogs - can be turned into RSS Feeds that are read around the world!

A huge number of webmasters are also using software programs to find RSS Feeds that relate to their own topics... and they are re-publishing the content in these feeds on their web pages. The reason that they do this is to provide "constantly updating content", which causes the search engine spiders to visit their pages more frequently - ultimately enhancing their rankings in the major search engines.

What does this mean for you?

Imagine publishing your email newsletter, and with the press of a button having it syndicated across 4,000 content- relative websites at the same time!

You can expect A LOT of exposure, highly-targeted visitors clicking through to YOUR website... and, of course, Inbound Links from those web pages to yours, which will boost your own search engine rankings.

RSS is very easy to use and to implement, once you familiarize yourself with the basic tools available. The great thing is, most of them are free!

The options are literally as endless as you are creative...

"What the Blog?"

I've written on blogging before, and as an expert, having held three successful Business Blogging Boot Camp training seminars locally, and participated in discussions on blogging all over the Internet, I feel compelled to update DEMC readers on what's happening in the blogosphere, and what it might mean to you. Let's review four questions and answers about the blogosphere:

First-is blogging the next big thing? Is it the latest and greatest in technology?

Some people think so. Those of us who use it as a business tool, to inform and educate our readers, know that blogging is merely an extension of the ability of the Internet to help create networks, communities of like-minded people, groups that support a collective cause. It's THE next thing in technology, but is it the next BIG thing, or the latest and greatest? That is a matter of opinion. My opinion is that it is leading us to the next big thing.

For you e-mail marketers-no blogging isn't putting you out of business. If you're clever, use a blog to supplement your e-mail marketing efforts. Engage readers on your blog to read your newsletter, and sell advertising on one or the other, or both. Always authorize ads that are relevant to your audience, and you'll find that your readership will grow-because people trust your judgment, and trust builds referrals.

Second, isn't blogging just journaling online? Aren't most blogs just folks chatting away, sort of like an online café, sipping coffee and munching cake while talking about what their sister did on her last date?

No. Let me repeat that: no, blogging isn't "just journaling." In the sense that blogs are the personal voice of each author's writing, and that for the most part, they are offered in reverse chronological order (last post to first post), you may look upon them as journaling. However, technorati, the online blog directory, says it's following over 4 million blogs today. It updates its database every 7 minutes-with news from bloggers all over the world. These bloggers are not chatting about their sister, June, or their Dad's prostrate surgery, or their dog's fleas- although some may be. Most of the bloggers today are in it for the business value. Blogs are a personal face to clients, customers, vendors, competitors, and prospects. Unlike Web sites, which offer pretty much static content, even when updated regularly, blogs offer insight into the person...into the heart of the company...into the thought process behind the products and services.

When used as a business tool, blogging is a powerful connector. Check out these blogs for reference on how to work a business blog and also make money:

Third, blogging is a lot of work, who has time?

YOU have time. Yes, blogging requires consistent-think three or more times per week-updating, but...you do have the time, and the content. It's right in front of you on a daily basis. If you can't quote newspaper articles relevant to your business, or find something in an industry publication (complete with a link to it online), look at other blog posts from other bloggers. Surely, out of the over 4 million linked to at technorati, you can find three or four to write about.

Of course, if you're writing a newsletter...heavens, use content from that! It's your work. Posting the same material in more than one place isn't a bad thing. It's a GREAT thing. Put a paragraph in your blog and link to your Web site for further reading. Offer holiday sales on your blog and direct the linked landing page to your Web site. Explain a new word, or quote from an uplifting, inspirational book. Really, coping out of a blog because you don't "have time," or, "don't know what to write," is just putting you further and further behind. No, no one will come to your blog if you don't do two things: announce it to them, and link it to them. Find out who's blogging in your area of expertise, make friends with them, exchange links, and watch how quickly you gain readers. Blogging is about networking, not working. The blogosphere is waiting for your voice. Don't be silent -we're all waiting to hear from you.

There's nothing new about using joint ventures to get traffic to websites. And good information is freely available from many internet marketing sites on how to set up JVs.

This article is for the 97% of webmasters who aren't aware of a particularly powerful JV partner who already exists, and is willing to work with you.

Before I reveal all, let me just check...

Like me, I would image you'd be happy if:

* Your JV partner's site gets huge traffic.
* The vast majority of page views are by targeted traffic.
* You can create links wherever YOU like from their site.

* It costs you pennies to set up and run.

If so, welcome to eBay. You're new joint venture partner.

But I Thought..

"eBay?" I hear you ask, "Isn't eBay just an auction site?"

Well, it certainly started as an auction site. Today, eBay is an ecommerce phenomenon.

* eBay's 1.5 billion page views puts it in sixth place on Alexa traffic rankings. Ahead of Amazon, AOL and CNN.
* eBay members make 79 million targeted searches for items each day.
* There are 35,000 categories within which to place items for sale.
* There are eBay auction sites in 27 countries.
* eBay has 125 million registered users.
* 40,000 new members join eBay each day.

What we have is a hugely successful internet business with massive traffic. And, thanks to eBay's sophisticated categorization and searching mechanisms, the traffic is totally targeted.

More importantly, there are several smart ways to drive eBay's targeted traffic to your own website. All of these clever methods add up to what I call the eBay Traffic Funnel.

Does it work? Well, I sell a communications product from my website. I run 5 simple auctions in the appropriate categories using the principles of the eBay Traffic Funnel. Each auction costs me 30 cents and runs for a week. I get around 300 targeted leads from these auctions to my website every week. Not bad for one dollar fifty!

Let me show you just one of the ways to get hold of that targeted traffic...

Sell, Sell, Sell

First of all, you make eBay part of your marketing mix. You start selling your products on eBay.

Why do I say this? Well, eBay isn't just for mom and pop businesses anymore. IBM, Disney, Motorola, Xerox and Dell, are just a few of the major corporations that use eBay as an additional sales and lead generation channel.

Creating eBay auctions is easy. Anyone can do it - literally. But if you don't want to learn, you can use a Trading Assistant. These are eBay experts who will create, run and manage auctions on behalf of others for a percentage of sales or a small fee.

When you set up your auction one of the decisions you make is in which category to place your item. This is important. Visitors to your auction page - just by being there - have self qualified themselves as being in the market to buy products in that category. This is targeting in real time.

But merely creating the auction isn't the trick. This is the key tip. In your auction page, make sure you tell your viewers that if they've any questions about your auction, your products or your policies, they should email you. And encourage them to do this by having a live email link in your auction, like this one brian@more-auction-sales.com

As soon as they make contact with you, you've acquired a targeted prospect you wouldn't have got any other way. You can start building a relationship. You can get them on your list, direct them to your website and start selling to them.
