Cort: One of my favorite areas of Psychology has to do with Persuasion and I know if you are a marketer of anything you need to know the techniques that work. My guest is that man – David Barron. David, I know that you are one of the "hotshots" in Internet Marketing; however I would like to know what you did before your Net involvement. When was this? What got you interested in the Net?
David: I started as a clinical hypnotist in San Jose, CA. I considered myself a darn good one and still do. My interest in Internet Marketing came about out of desperation. Even as good a hypnotist as I was I wasn't making the income that I wanted to. It was a rough start but eventually my Internet Marketing skills grew as did my income.
Cort: Did you see the value of Email Marketing almost immediately after it appeared? What made you get involved with Email Marketing?
David: No. It wasn't immediate but when it became clear how important Email Marketing is it became a central part of my marketing.
Cort: What are you doing to avoid the ever present spam filters from putting your email in spam folders?
David: That is a tough one. The best way to avoid spam filters is to use a double opt-in system. When you want to grow your list quickly the double opt-in is a hard choice but it provides good quality list members.
Cort: What are your feelings about Plain vs. HTML Email Marketing?
David: My first response when I personally see an HTML email is spam so I tend to avoid them. But a lot of my list members choose HTML formated emails so I always make sure to include an HTML version of my newsletter when I send one out.
Cort: What have been your biggest successes in your business and why? Failures?
David: Success: Taking the L-O-N-G view of things. I would much rather SLOWLY build my list with quality subscribers than try to make money quickly. I want loyalty first from my market and profit second. I designed a strategy that took me a long time to develop and implement. It includes integrating emails, web pages, and down loadable PDFs that have good content and a feature product.
I want people to read the email, web page and PDFs for the content and keep or pass the PDF along to someone else. But every step of the way there is some small recommendation of a book or product. Eventually they will buy something. I take the LONG view, remember.
My Failures? All my successes are built on all my failures.
Cort: I sure can identify with that David! What would be your advice to Internet newbies concerning Email Marketing?
David: Go for a quality list more than a big list. Second is to train your list members to buy from you. Offer good and free advice then recommend a good product. It could be yours or an affiliated product that is within most people's price range. Give surveys with bonuses and ANYTHING that will compel your list members into even the smallest action.
Slowly, slowly slowly make bigger offers. YOU'LL be training your list, if you can get your market as narrow as possible. "Make money fast" is a saturated market so I would recommend that you try to find something that you are passionate about that you would LOVE to write about and build web sites about.
Cort: What would be your advice to Internet newbies concerning Internet Marketing in general?
David: Start with as clearly a thought out plan as possible. In fact, I'd recommend that they don't even take action until they have EVERY detail worked out. It makes the work so much easier.
Cort: David has some incredible advice and interviews he shares and you can go to http://www.power-persuasion.com and make sure to subscribe to his newsletter to his regular PDFs he refers to in the interview.
