My 2 Secret Weapons to Email Success

Today I’d like to share with you two questions subscribers recently sent in. You’ll find the answers to the questions reveal my 2 secret weapons to email success.

I expect there have been times you too have wondered if your email was even opened. So how can you tell?

Let me start by saying, tracking email open rates is not an exact science.

The first step to tracking if your email has been opened is to send HTML email.

If you are sending plain text email, there is no way to track open rates. Your only option is to track click through rates on the URLs you have included in the body of your email.

When you send HTML email, a simple way to track your open rates is to include an image in the email. Each time a reader opens the email, the image file is loaded from your web host into the email. You can then check your server logs or web statistics and see how many times was the image loaded.

Each time the image is loaded, it indicates that a person opened the email.

Of course, should a person open your email multiple times, it will falsely increase your open rate. You also need to consider that some email programs do not load in images until the subscriber clicks to allow the image to load. As a result, some subscribers will read your email without loading in the image and your open rates will be lower. Lastly, subscribers with dial-up accounts, may download your email and read it offline, which prevents the image from loading.

Despite these issues, you can still gain a good sense on how many of your subscribers are opening your email by adding a small image file to your email. Most people use a clear GIF as the image, which is an invisible graphic that is usually 1 pixel by 1 pixel in size. Be sure to rename your image file for each emailing so when reviewing your web reports you can compare open rates of each emailing.

Tracking the open rates as well as the click throughs of your emails lets you know if your marketing is working or not. What emails get read and acted upon vs. what gets trashed. is an invaluable tool to your email success.
