First, let me share a little background story on why I'm writing
about making money from your email list.
Yesterday, I was talking with a friend of a friend about my
occupation at a kids play date. I expected the usual response -
"Oh that's nice." - from the other mother.
Instead she replied, I do the social networking for my uncle's

experienced enough to do social networking not know the
money making power of email!
Later that day, I was doing my normal net surfing on the
latest email happenings and I came across a forum post -
"How can I monetize my 2k email list?"
Again, I was surprised by the question.
When you're as email centric as I am, clearly you can become
out of touch. I had been assuming everyone just knew they
should have an email list because of how profitable it is to
market by email.
Having an email list has been my livelihood for years!
In my mind... Email List = Money
And, I guarantee if you build an email list - it will make
But how? How do you make money from your email list?
How do you invest $1 and make back $40?
Here's a 10 step plan that shows you how to make your email
list into a profit machine.
Step 1: Continuously generate new subscribers.
An email list declines in size by 25% every year according
to MarketingSherpa. Subscribers unsubscribe and email
addresses becomes undeliverable over time.
Therefore, the first step to making money with your email
list is to continuously work on getting new subscribers.

Also be sure you are asking all visitors who come to your web
site, blog, Facebook page, etc. to sign-up for your email list.

Step 2: Welcome all subscribers.
Once a subscriber signs up, send a welcome email confirming
their subscription. The welcome email receives the highest
open rate of any email you send - so use an autoresponder to
send your welcome email immediately!
Your initial immediate message should -
* Welcome subscribers
* Encourage them to follow you on social media
* Deliver any promised material
* Address any technical points (e.g. to whitelist you).
Your welcome email is your subscriber's first impression of your
email communication. It sets the tone for your relationship
so spend time on making this first email excellent.
Step 3: Follow-up by autoresponder at least 7 - 10 times.
An automated autoresponder follow-up series does the work
for you of building a relationship with your new subscribers.
You create the informative messages series once and then let
the autoresponder do it's work month after month, year after
year. Your automated messages should provide good
information, free resources and invite feedback.
I've had an autoresponder series in place for years and at least
once every day a new subscriber writes in with a question,
response or comment. These individuals appreciate the
information the autoresponder sends. They also get to know
me through the automated messages.

Step 4: Send out an email newsletter at least twice monthly
(once weekly is even better).
Your email newsletter should contain interesting content.
Include informative articles and links to other relevant articles
Through your email newsletter mailings you maintain the
relationship your autoresponder series started to developed.
An email list to which you only send promotional ads has little
value. Your subscribers end up ignoring you and they'll delete
all the messages you send.
Content is crucial to email marketing profitability! And an

Step 5: Promote your business' products / services.
More than likely if your marketing online - you are promoting
Now that you're building an email list, delivering content to
your subscribers and developing a relationship with them -
it's time to start selling.
Yes, you should send out promotional emails to your
subscribers asking them to purchase your products and
services. Send special offers and highlight the benefits of
what you sell.
If your business does not yet have products / services -
work on developing some.

* Offer your services (You could be a designer, a freelancer,
* Get creative - what product / service ideas do you have?

worry your email list can still make you money!
