Yesterday I was speaking with a new customer who is just
starting out in his online business.
He was excited about the business program in which he was
involved and ready to market his affiliate site. He asked,
"Now before I begin marketing, can you give me some
quick insider tips that'll give me a head start?"
I said, "That's a great question and I promise I'll write up
for you my top 10 insider email marketing tips! Just give me
48 hours and then check your email box."
He laughed and said he would eagerly await the tips.
Here they are:
1) Build an email list!
I hope you expected that to be the first tip! :-)
All online (and offline) businesses should have their own
email list. Your list is a cornerstone of your marketing.
Every page of your web site should have a sign-up form for
your list. All of your marketing should promote getting
sign-ups to your list.
Promoting your affiliate site URL and failing to have a
method that collects the email addresses of visitors to your
site is a recipe for failure. Make sure you get the email
addresses of your visitors and build your email list.
2) Give away an interesting freebie.
How do you get individuals to sign-up for your email list?
You provide an incentive that makes them want to join your
list. It could be a free ebook, a coupon for your product /
services or an interesting report. Your freebie just needs
to be relevant to your target audience and they'll sign-up.

3) Use your subscriber's name.
Your subscription form should ask for your subscriber's
name in addition to his/her email address. Then use your
subscriber's name in your correspondence. Personalizing
your emails will generate a better response from your
readers.
4) Send valuable information.
Email is all about building a relationship. If you only send
sales letters or promotion after promotion your subscribers
will quickly loose interest in what you have to say.
Continue to send interesting content to your readers as well
as valuable freebies. When you come across articles on the
Internet you like, send the link to your subscribers. Or if
you learn of free ebook give aways notify your readers.
You might even consider writing up articles yourself ! ;-)
But if you're not much of a writer use article directories

find articles which would be of interest to your list
members and share those articles.
When you use email to provide valuable information to
your prospects you win their business.
5) Talk about yourself.
You might say, what - I thought it was impolite to talk
about myself. Well, yes, at a cocktail party you shouldn't
dominate the conversation! :-) But in email communication
you build rapport with your subscribers when you tell them
about yourself and what you're doing in your life.
Think of all the social networking sites on the Internet.
People love to learn about people. So in your emails talk
a little bit about yourself - what you like to do for fun
or what you did on your last vacation.
Why do you think most sites have an "About Us" page?
People want to know about the people with whom they do
business. So don't be shy - start talking!
6) Make the most of the first 30 days.
Studies show new subscribers are the most likely to read
your emails and purchase from you in the first month.
Make sure you have in place an autoresponder series for
your new sign-ups. Your autoresponder emails should send
out a combination of good content and sales materials over
the first 30 days and work to close the sale.

7) Communicate regularly with your subscribers.
Even after the first 30 days have passed do not throw out
your list. Communicate regularly with subscribers. Yes, the
conversion rate is lower after 30 days have passed but
subscribers who have been on your list for a while still do
purchase. When you communicate regularly with your list
you continually remind them of your presence.
Perhaps when they first signed up they were not in a
position to take advantage of your product / service, but
if you've kept in touch, in a year, two or three they then
may be ready to buy. An email monthly or even quarterly can
do the trick to keep you in touch and make you more sales.
8) Get your own domain.
Yes, having your own web site with your own domain is of
tremendous importance. However, as I'm discussing email
tips, my recommendation for your own domain in this
instance is for your email.
Beyond just looking a lot more profession than -
myonlinebusiness@yahoo.com - study after study shows
that your email delivery improves drastically when you
have your own domain.
If you want to get your email into your prospect's inbox -
spend the 7 bucks and get your own domain - it's well
worth the investment.
9) Pick a niche market.
The Internet is a huge marketplace. If you want to stand
out and get attention for your business you need to focus
your marketing on a target group of people. Sure your
product / service might be perfect for everyone but you
will have a lot more success selling it if you focus on a
specific group of people.

10) Test, test and test!
Testing is an essential part of marketing and email
marketing is no different. What should you test?
* Test your emails by sending them to yourself before
sending them to your list
* Test your email copy (long copy vs. short copy)
* Test your subject lines
* Test your extras (do some add-ons pull better than others)
Just be sure when testing you keep an important recent
finding in mind. A new ScanAlert report has discovered
that consumers will delay on average 34 hours from the
time they first click to site and when they finally buy
something there.
So if your last email promotion hasn't made great sales in
the first 24hrs - you'd better give it at least 48hrs before
judging the results!
