Cort: Today I have the pleasure of being with Raamakant from India and author of the very successful ebook The eSuccess Code. I know that you are one of the new “hotshots” in Internet Marketing; however I would like to know what you did before your Net involvement. When was this? What got you interested in the Net?
Raamakant: I worked with a Multi Level Marketing company from 2002 to May 2004. That company deals in Health Care products. At that time I didn’t know the power of Internet but I always wanted to do a business which I could spread around the entire globe.
One day I met my friend who was selling handcrafted products on the Net. I liked the idea and decided to sell handcrafted products on BaaZee.com (Now eBay.in). I created my account, bought some stock and put up my products on BaaZee.com. I didn’t get any results. (I got just one order and he never sent me payment for that.)
Then I changed my strategy. I bought some e-books (with resale rights) through eBay.com and started selling on BaaZee.com. This time I got great results and I received around 900 orders in 3 months (July - September 2004). Then BaaZee.com was acquired by eBay.com and they disallowed selling downloadable products.
By that time I had come to know that digital products are the best products to sell online. You do not need to manage inventory, shipping or returns.
In October 2004 I launched my first website http://www.ecomsecrets.com.
Cort: Did you see the value of Email Marketing almost immediately after it appeared? What made you get involved with Email Marketing?
Raamakant: I came to know about the power of email marketing when I was selling e-books on Baazee.com.
I don’t know why but I started collecting email address of my buyers. One day I was launching a new e-book and suddenly I got an idea that I should inform my existing customers about this new book. I had around 100 names on my list. I created an email and sent it to all 100 people. That time I didn’t know about autoresponders so it took around one hour to send email to all of them.
Within 5 hours of mailing I got 15 orders from my existing customers. That day I learned the power of an email list. As I said I got 900 orders in 3 months; around 50% I got from my existing customers.
Cort: What are you doing to avoid the ever present spam filters from putting your email in spam folders? Are you considering using PDF files to send your emails and ezine like I have started to do?
Raamakant: Currently I am doing 3 things:
1. I avoid using spam trigger words.
2. I always check spam rating before sending email.
3. I put the same matter on my Blog so if somebody missed the email he can check it on my Blog.
I’m not considering using PDF files right now.
Cort: What are your feelings about Plain vs. HTML Email Marketing?
Raamakant: I always send plain emails because I think email is just for informing people about the website, so they can see my offer. The emails job is to pre-sell the product and lead the reader to the web sales page. On the web sales page you can use HTML, Audio and Videos.
One more reason I stick with text is that not all people can receive HTML emails but everyone can receive plain text.
Cort: What have been your biggest successes in your business and why? Failures? What would you do differently if you could do things over?
Raamakant: My biggest success in business is receiving thank-you emails and testimonials from my subscribers and buyers. My mission is that my all subscribers earn money from the Internet. That’s why I always try to make systems so other people especially newbies can make money with the least amount of effort. If they are making money through my system, they’ll happily spend money on my recommendation.
My biggest success will come on the day that I launch my Dream Project.
Failures: Fortunately I do not believe I've faced any failure yet.
If I have to start again, I’ll do the same thing I’m doing right now.
Cort: What would be your advice to Internet newbies concerning Email Marketing?
Raamakant:If you have an email list and you use it wisely, you can print money on demand. Here are my suggestions to newbies:
* Don’t send more than 2 emails per week.
* Don’t send sales offers every time you send email. Some times send useful article or some tips, some times send gift like useful software or a report. Tell them about your new achievements.
* If you have any problems, don’t be afraid to ask for help.
* Always offer something that your subscribers are interested in. Like if you have a list of dog lovers don’t send them mail about gardening.
* Always use your personal style when you write emails.
* If one of your subscribers asks for something, always reply timely and politely.
Cort: Also you have a Special for DEMCers:
